The Olubadan designate, High Chief Saliu Adetunji, has disclosed that he did not believe he could mount the throne of the Olubadan of Ibadan in his life time.
He said he reluctantly accepted to be Mogaji in 1976, adding that he rose through the cadre for 40 years but the number of people ahead of him as at October 2015 did not even make him think he could ascend the throne.
But the two most senior high chiefs, who were next-in-line to the throne, died in November and December 2015 respectively. They are the late Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland and Otun Olubadan, high chiefs Sulaimon Omiyale and Omowale Kuye respectively.
Following their deaths, the late Oba Ofulana promoted High Chief Saliu A.O. Adetunji as the new Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Lekan Balogun as the Otun Olubadan, High Chief Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin as the Otun Balogun, High Chief Senator Rasidi Ladoja as Osi Olubadan and High Chief Dr Olufemi Olaifa as Osi Balogun of Ibadanland.
Others are High Chief Sir Eddy Oyewole who was elevated from the position of the Ekerin Olubadan to the rank of the Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Tajudeen Abimbola as Ashipa Balogun of Ibadan, High Chief Kola Daisi as the Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland and High Chief Solomom A. Adabale as the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland.
While Seriki chiefs struggled to stop their promotion through the court with the hope of getting themselves installed as next-in-line, Oba Odulana joined his ancestors on January 19, 2016, thereby paving the for Adetunji’s emergence as the new Olubadan.
The Olubadan designate will be enthroned as the 41st Olubadan on Friday March 4, 2016 at Mapo Hall.
When asked if he ever thought or whether his ascension to the throne was ever predicted, the new Olubadan said:
“I never thought of it. I was behind many chiefs in ranking. They were many. Even the person who persuaded me to become a Mogaji was ahead of me in ranking. How then would I have thought of becoming Olubadan? But when you are destined for something, it will come to pass. “
Oba Adetunji was a tailor early in life before venturing into music production. Under three music labels, he promoted several artistes of popular Yoruba music genres of Fuji, Juju and Apala. Renowned artistes that rose to stardom through his label include Wasiu Ayinde, Ebenezer Obey and Alhaji Dauda Epo Akara.
No fewer than 40 musicians have lined up to perform at his coronation.
