At the mention of the word corruption, the Nigerian politician, is usually the first person to be eyed and fingered. Politicians find it hard to dissociate themselves from corruption and all other problems the country is grappling with.
On Thursday, former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Ameachi, while being screened by the senate, said that he had never taken bribe in his life. His words: “I have never taken bribe in my life”
He added: “Believe me, if there is one man who doesn’t like corruption…I do not like corruption”
That claim did not go down well with many Nigerians who would rather believe that “Pope Francis is Buhari’s cousin” than the claim that a politician like Amaechi was free from corruption.
Nigerians reacted like this:
Now, a fellow politician, former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, is unhappy about the fact that Nigerians would not spare politicians.
Fayemi, who is currently a Ministe- designate, spoke at the 2015 edition of Akintola Williams Distingushed Lecture Series on Thursday at the Muson Centre, Lagos.
He lamented that Nigerians hold politicians responsible for every ill in the country. He said:
“We politicians are the scapegoats for all that is wrong in our country & are thought to be the most afflicted by such deficiencies”
He tweeted those words hours later.
Nigerians reacted in different ways. Some were quick to tell him that it was not a matter of perception.
One of his followers on social media commented:
Sir, I don’t think you are scapegoats rather, you should be held responsible vice versa. You dictate more than 90 % of societal affairs
See other reactions as captured on twitter:
So, TRUE or FALSE… Politicians are responsible for 90% of Nigeria’s problems, the people are only responsible for 10%.
Drop your comments, how many per cent of Nigeria’s problems are politicians responsible for. How many are the masses responsible for?
