In reaction to attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in South Africa, some protesters on Tuesday stormed an outlet of Shoprite on Lekki-Epe expressway in Lagos, chanting violent songs.
The protesters attempted to break into the mall but were stopped by policemen on ground. Four police trucks had to be deployed there to stop the protesters. The mall, as well as the one in Ikeja, have been forced to close down.
Those involved in the act reportedly lost their family members to xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
There has been rage in Nigeria since the persistemt xenophobic attacks resumed over the weekend. Foreigners, including Nigerians, are being killed and their properties and businesses destroyed and looted by South Africans.
Many Nigerians are calling for reciprocal moves on Sputh African concerns in Nigeria some of which are Shoprite, MTN, Multichoice, Stanbic IBTC and Protea Hotels.
