North Korea has fired several short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan, in a provocative move days after Donald Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was “starting to respect” the US.
The Pentagon said the US military detected “multiple North Korean ballistic missile launches” between 6.19am and 6.49am local time in North Korea. “Initial assessment indicates three short-range ballistic missile launches,” the Pentagon said.
It added the first and third missiles failed in flight, while the second appeared to have destructed just after launch. “US Pacific Command stands behind our ironclad commitment to the security of our allies in the Republic of Korea and Japan,” the Pentagon said.
