Three Students’ Union leaders in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, have been suspended for allegedly assaulting a Professor in the institution.
The suspended leaders are the President of the Student Union, Omotayo Akande; the Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojedokun and the General Secretary, Seun Oketooto.
While Akande was suspended for six semesters, Ojedokun and Oketooto got four semesters.
The trio are in their final years and supposed to write their final examinations in two months time.
However, students of the university believe that the suspension of the studentunion leaders was not unconnected with their agitation for better welfare.
Akande, a 500 level student of Chemical Engineering said he and his colleagues were suspended due to their roles in demanding better welfare for students.
He appealed to well meaning Nigerians, students, organizations and human rights group to come to their aid and rescue them from the suspension.
It would be recalled that students of the OAU had staged a peaceful protest, lecture boycott and media campaign against the poor state of infrastructure.
