Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has sacked the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Mr. Reginald Okun.
He also sent the General Manager of the State Waste Management Board, Mr. Aiyamenkue Akonofua, on compulsory retirement.
The governor also directed that the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Obahiagbon R.E., be redeployed.
The sack of the officials may not be unconnected to Tuesday’s protest by street sweepers in the state. The angry sweepers stormed the government house in Benin to protest the non payments of their salaries. They said some of them were being owed up to six months.
In a chat with Channels TV, Akonofua said the sweepers were only being owed two to three months salaries and that the delay was due to restructuring going on in the agency.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, the affected officials were directed to “handover their assignments to the most senior government officials in their respective offices. They are also to handover all government properties in their possession to the appropriate authorities.”
Obaseki thanked them for their service to the state and wished them well in their future endeavours.
