As part of its 25th year graduation anniversary, the 1988-1993 set of the Old Students Association of Olivet Baptist High School (Olivet Heights) Oyo, is taking up projects aimed at giving back to their alma mater.
The group has embarked on the renovation of a block of classrooms in the school, with plans to fix new furniture and other state of the art facilities to enhance learning.
The General Secretary of the group, Mr Olagunju Abiodun who spoke to Newspeakonline, explained that the group embarked on the project, in spite of its capital intensive nature, in order to show gratitude to God and to the school “that made us what we are today.”
“To the glory of God, our members are doing well in various fields”, he said. “Some of us are in banking, construction, oil and gas and politics, with some are occupying public offices. We owe God a lot of gratitude. And we owe the school, the well from which we drank.”
He stated further that “apart from giving to the school as an entity, the current students are not left out.” A member of the set who is currently a successful entrepreneur in the paint manufacturing industry, Mr Remi Amusan, is empowering some of the students with skills in paint making.
At one of the training sessions, Amusan, who is the CEO of Petrus Paints, advised the students to take the acquisition of vocational skills serious because “what you studied in the university may not be what you may use to succeed in future”.
He said: “I studied marketing in the university. I worked in the insurance sector for 10 years. I started paint production five years ago and I can tell you that so far, I have achieved more than I achieved in the insurance sector.”
Abiodun said that the renovated classrooms will be unveiled at a ceremony slated for Saturday, July 14, at the school’s premises, to mark the 25th graduation anniversary.
According to him, notable personalities, other members of the old students association includng the National President of the Old Students Association, Mr. Gbolahan Labinjo, will be in attendance.
