The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has summoned an emergency meeting of all mogajis (family heads) and baales (community heads) in Idi Arere area to an emergency meeting in his palace at Popoyemoja, Ibadan following Sunday’s attack by arsonists.
Unknown hoodlums in the early hours of Sunday burnt down about 30 buildings in Idi Arere along the Bode-Oja Oba road in Ibadan. Many shops and residential homes were burnt in the attack that took place in the middle of the night.
The Mogajis and Baales expected at the palace on Tuesday by 12noon include those whose family compounds fall within Oja’gbo, Beyerunka, Labiran, Idi Arere/Asuni, Asaka, Isale Osi, Oopo Yeosa and Olorisa Oko areas of Ibadan.
Oba Adetunji revealed plans for the proposed emergency meeting when he received members of the National Council of Muslim Youth (NACOMYO) led by Sheikh Daud Afolabi in his palace on Sunday.
According to the monarch, the recent criminal activities of street urchins in some areas of the city was becoming worrisome and needed to be contained through the collective efforts of stakeholders and community leaders.
Oba Adetunji who sympathized with the victims of the arson and looting noted that the security of lives and property is not only the responsibility of law enforcement agents but of all and sundry.
He also stated that as the 2019 general elections approach, it is important for all family heads and Baales in Ibadan who notice any strange movement to promptly report the matter to the police for appropriate action.
He also condemned those who have formed the habit of tearing other candidates’ posters and banners, warning that they should be reported and apprehended to prevent break down of law and order.
