The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi on Sunday broke a 79 year-old record when he visited Oyo. He did not just visit Oyo, he visited the Alafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on the occasion of the latter’s 45th coronation anniversary.
The last time the Ooni visited the Alafin was in 1937.
Venue of Sunday’s event was the Methodist Church, Apaara, Oyo. Many other Yoruba Oba’s were also at the event which later turned out to be an epoch making and groundbreaking one.
Recall that there had been a long time rivalry between the late Ooni Sijuwade and Oba Adeyemi before the former’s demise. They hardly agreed on cultural and political. The supremacy battle was intense.
But on Sunday, the newly installed Ooni, Oba Ogunwusi, kept the promise he made on his installation that he would work hard to end the supremacy battle, with or without the Alaafin or other Yoruba Oba’s.
And Oba Adeyemi expressed delight to receive the Ooni. On his feud with the Ooni’s stool, he said:
“The misunderstanding started during the reign of the last Ooni. May your reign be long, Ooni. I am happy with Ooni Ogunwusi’s moves to unite all Yoruba Obas.
More than 30 Obas were present at Sunday’s event. They included the Timi of Ede, Owa Ajero of Ijero, Ore of Otun Ekiti, Orangun of Ila, Akinrun of Ikirun, Aragbiji of Iragbiji and Elerin of Erin Osun
