The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has berated some Accord Party leaders for over-estimating their party’s strength in the local government elections fixed for February 11, 2017.
A report had it on Tuesday that the former senator representing Oyo South, Olufemi Lanlehin, and the Oyo Central senatorial candidate of the Accord in the 2015 general elections, Chief Bisi Ilaka, and former publicity secretary of the opposition party, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, described the Accord Party as the party to beat in Oyo State in the polls, if they eventually held.
But in a statement issued on Wednesday, the APC described the Accord Party men and women as ‘politicians of yesterday who had sunk deep into political ocean with a godfather’.
The statement signed the Oyo APC Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, took a swipe at the Accord Party members over what it called reckless ranting.
It read: “We were taken aback when we read the reckless statement credited to both Sen. Lanlehin and Chief Ilaka who were obviously testing the waters to know whether they were still relevant in the polity having suffered colossal losses in the last general elections as Accord party candidates.
“However, we are particularly obliged to remind the duo that no gang-up of spent forces and failed leaders would yield any desired results inasmuch as such as the good people of the state have been fully liberated and they would never go back to their vomit again.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the planned local government elections of early next year would be the final burial of the Accord party in Oyo State as APC is waxing stronger with the influx of credible members of the opposition Accord, PDP, LP, SDP and others into our fold. Even the sole proprietor of the Accord in the state knows that his party stands no chance as his personal interest does not lie in victory for the opposition party candidates but in the proceeds of political patronage ahead of the polls.
“Furthermore, it is only those who are not sincere with themselves that would discredit the resolve of the OYSIEC to conduct credible elections on the date announced. We trust the ability of the commission to deliver on promise and we are not leaving any stone unturned to ensure all-round victory at the polls. As soon as the guidelines are made public, our great party would begin its full build-up for the elections as we shall be fielding credible and patriotic candidates for the available posts.
“Adeniran, another chieftain of the Accord, was also credited with some obnoxious comments which we view as laughable. He listed some local government areas as the stronghold of his party but he failed to mention the one where he was the chairman for three years and which he still claims as his origin. What other pointer do we need to identify a failed politician if not a tacit admission of one’s unpopularity at home?”
