The central market in Oyo town, popularly known as Akesan was on Monday shut down after rival gangs unleashed violence on the market and adjoining areas.
Newspeakonline gathered that guns, bottles, machetes and other dangerous weapons were freely used in the “pay back” attack between the dreaded rival gangs known as Agunpopo and Ilaka.
Trouble reportedly started when the ‘Ilaka boys’ accused the ‘Akesan boys’ of dancing with one their boys’ girlfriend at a carnival which, sources said, took place on Sunday at Iseke area of the ancient town.
The Akesan boys overpowered the Ilaka boys who then returned for a “pay back” on Monday morning.
Residents had on several occasion alerted security agents and well-meaning indigenes of the town to the activities of these miscreants who have locations which they called ‘base’ everywhere in the town.
A police source said said that over 15 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
Prince Akeem Adeyemi who represents Oyo federal constituency told newsmen that: “Yesterday’s event was so unfortunate. And with what they have done, their end has come. We will do all within the law to get these never-do-wells booked. It is saddening, backward and nasty. Are we in the state of nature? No. All security agencies must rise to the ocassion. We cannot afford to be drawn backward while other towns continue to develop progressively,”.
