The Oyo state government has restated plans to relocate traders and other occupants of Temidire plank market to Shalade area, a suburb in Ibadan, the state capital.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Communication and Strategy, Mr. Yomi Layinka said that the state government’s decision to relocate the market was due to complaints by residents over consistent fire incident and other hazards emanated from the activities in the market.
Layinka said that the market was founded 40 years ago when the area was yet to be built up with residential houses. He said the market now has to be moved away to save lives of the residents in the area.
He also said that the agreement between the tenants and government on the land since 1976 had expired, making the occupation of the land illegal.
He said the new market at Shalade area has been provided with modern facilities, cinemas and other social services noting that before the end of this year, first set of traders will move in.
