Oyo State Police Command has apprehended five members of a group, which forcefully hijacked Amuludun 99.1FM at Moniya, Ibadan, in the early hours of Sunday.
A statement by the command’s spokesperson SP Adewale Osifeso, gave the names of the suspects as Noah Atoyebi, Gbenga Adeleke, Abdulganiyu Kolawole, Bashiru Kehinde and Elijah Fajola.
According to Osifeso, the intention of the suspects was to declare liberation from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, adding that policemen on intelligence patrol intercepted the suspects after a distress call.
“None of the personnel of the radio station or anyone was hurt as the Command responded swiftly in a well coordinated rescue operation,” he said.
Osifeso further explained that the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of the State Criminal Investigation a d Intelligence Department (SCIID) has been detailed to lead a team to investigate circumstances that led to the incident, as well as expand network of arrests thorough painstaking intelligence driven investigation.
The police spokesperson described the incident as a criminal, unpatriotic act and a clear case of terrorism, which would be handled with adequate sanctions under the laws of the land.
He urged parents and guardians to warn their children against being used to disrupt Monday’s swearing-in ceremony as “heavy sanctions await defaulters and other unpatriotic elements sharing the same sinister motives.”
