The Executive Secretary, Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), Dr Sola Akande, has said the Federal Government has mandated the health insurance scheme in Nigeria
The OYSHIA boss stated this in an interview with newspeakonline.
He said: “Health insurance is now mandatory in Nigeria. The President has signed the new NHIA act into law, which says health insurance is mandatory for every resident. That is why NHIS is no longer NHIS; it is now NHIA. It has become National Health Insurance Authority and one of the key changes in that law is mandatoriness of health insurance for every citizen and resident of Nigeria.
“I can assure us that, that will be enforced with time. Gradually, you get to the level, you will want to register your child in a school and they ask for health insurance certificate. You want to do business with government, organised private sector and they will ask for the health certificate of your workers.
“It is important that before we get there, make choices. Health insurance for your life is not IGR, it is about your life. About 85% to 90% of your money goes back to the hospital.”
