Scientists have discovered a locally formulated product, Ganoderma coffee and green tea that can help in the management of high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis.

The products according to the scientists were carefully researched and meticulously formulated and backed fully by 20 years corporate experience in the study and development of natural products for health, food and cosmetics.

Renowned professor of Pharmacognosy, Professor Maurice Iwu, explaned how the products worked but warned  against  consumption of imported supplements, adding that, there is an inherent risk in taking any supplement made outside Nigeria.

Iwu who is also the President, Bioresources Development Group said Ganoderma mushroom (G. lucidum) is used in various systems of traditional medicine for treatment of a plethora of diseases. Further on health benefits, he hinted that a lot of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by taking Ganoderma.

“People know why they take tea and coffee but instead of taking just tea and coffee, what we now have is added Ganoderma and it helps modulate a lot of disease state.  It is chemo-preventive; it prevents cells from being attacked by ordinary normal environmental mutants, things that can affect your health.”

“Consumption of Ganoderma green tea overtime will also help you to lower the risk of high blood pressure. It works in cellular level. It prevents the body deterioration that will lead to the disease in the first place.

“The physiological benefits of coffee and green tea are well-known and include stimulant and antioxidant effects. What IHP has achieved in these two products is to develop synergistic formulations that maintain the integrity of the biologically active triterpenoids and polysaccharides of Ganoderma with high quality coffee and green tea.

Unveiling the  products from  the stable of Intercedd Health Products, IHP,  Iwu explained that systematic pharmacological and clinical studies suggest that Ganoderma is useful in the treatment of coronary heart diseases, arteriosclerosis, hepatitis, arthritis, nephritis, bronchitis, asthma, hypertension, cancer and gastric ulcer.

“We want to be able to use the traditional medicine and then use it as a cultural way of treatment rather than use it as historic because we have put a lot of science into it.”

Iwu who is also the President, Bioresources Development Group added that most of the supplements are preserved with chemicals that increase the risk of disease like cancer and others that cause ill health.

“Packaging is not everything. Most of those overseas products come with sleek packages but you do not know how much of heavy metals are contain in them. You do not know if they were grown under pesticides conditions etc. Anyone buying supplements made overseas is taking a very high risk,” he added.
