A young man, Emmanuel Owolanke has been arrested for operating an illegal hospital at Uso town, in Owo local government area of Ondo state.
A statement issued by the Ondo State Ministry of Health, and signed by its press officer, Abolarinwa Famakinwa, explained that the quack medical doctor killed two of his patients and caused various degrees of complications to other patients.
According to Famakinwa, the ministry had received a series of complaints from some individuals and there was a complication with one of his patients who underwent an ectopic pregnancy in his hospital.
The patient was redirected to the Federal Medical Center, Owo, where it was discovered that the operation was done by a quack.
Famakinwa explained that the hospital was closed down last year by the ministry when two people who were badly operated upon lost their lives. He however said that the hospital was illegally reopened by Owolanke.
Owolanke was said to have claimed to have studied medicine at Barbados University but later said he was an undergraduate of University of Benin, Edo State.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, who led the medical team to arrest the alleged fake doctor, said some of the patients had lost their lives.
He said: “Owolanke has been parading himself as a medical doctor and operating an illegal hospital which is Devine Hospital, behind St. Andrews Anglican Church in Uso. He has been apprehended and handed over to law enforcement agents.”
Dr Adegbenro said that the state government would press for maximum punishment for offenders to serve as a deterrent to those who do not have value for life. “The state has zero tolerance for quackery and the Ministry will continue to monitor the activities of medical personnel in the state,” he added.
