Barbadian pop star, Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, has filed a lawsuit in the US federal court in Los Angeles against her father, Ronald Fenty, over the use of the brand name, Fenty.
Fenty is their surname but it is also the brand name of Rihanna’s business ventures which includes Fenty Beauty line.
In 2017, her father, in partnership with Moses Perkins, also started an entertainment firm called Fenty Entertainment
But Rihanna is accusing her father of fraud and false advertising over his Fenty Entertainment Company saying that he is profiting off the reputation she has created with Fenty.
Rihanna also accused Fenty Entertainment of entering negotiations for her to perform 15 shows in Latin America for about $15million without her authorization. She also accused him of attempting to file a trademark for the name ‘Fenty’ to use on a chain of boutique hotels.
A press release had been posted on the firm’s website saying ‘Fenty Entertainment’ was launched with Rihanna despite the fact that she was not involved.
It was also reported that the singer said she had sent ‘multiple cease’ and ‘desist letters’ to her father ordering him to stop capitalizing on her Fenty trademarks but he allegedly ignored them.
Rihanna has asked the court to bar the firm from using the Fenty name for business and grant her damages.
Fenty Entertainment is yet to comment on the development.
