A massive protest against herdsmen is ongoing in Makurdi, Benue State capital. The protest is being led by Tiv farmers joined by other concerned residents of the state.
They are protesting against the recent killings by Fulani herdsmen. According to reports, major roads around Wurukum have been blocked and members of the Hausa/Fulani community are said be taking refuge in their mosques.
Riot policemen are battling to stop the protest which is gradually turning into a riot.
No fewer than 50 persons in Benue communities have been killed in the new year by suspected Fulani herdsmen who invaded parts of the Guma and Logo Local Government Areas of the state on January 1, 2018.
The attacks, which spilled over to Tuesday, came on the heels of the implementation of the anti-open grazing law, which the Fulani herdsmen considered detrimental to their means of livelihood.
The affected communities are Gaambe-Tiev, Ayilamo and Turan all in Logo LGA as well as Umenger, Tse-Akor and Tomatar near Tse-Abi in Nongov District of Guma LGA.
The invading herdsmen were said to have attacked Gaambe-Tiev, Ayilamo and Turan villages in Logo LGA on New Year’s Day at the time the people were returning from the New Year’s service.
