Former governor of Zamfara State and aspirant for the senate presidency seat, Abdulaziz Yari, has took his campaign to the national secretariat of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Speaking with reporters after meeting with the NNPP leadership in Abuja, on Thursday night, Yari said he is committed to the “Nigerian project.”
The senator-elect has refused to back down despite the position of the leadership of the the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party had nominated a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio for the senate presidency position.
But Yari disagree, saying he will visit the leadership of other political parties to rally support for his senate president bid.
“We are very committed to the Nigerian project, and we strongly believe that the constitution is going to prevail. We are going to the floor of the house and an election will take place.
“Fully knowing that it is a democratic setting, we need to be having these kind of engagement. This is my first place of call and I will be visiting other parties – Labour, SDP, PDP, APGA, and YPP to seek the support of their members in this project.
“The 10th assembly is different because we have seven parties, and every party and their votes count. We are going round to canvas the support from the leadership of the parties so they can speak with their members for us to do the right thing for Nigerians.
“We are going to continue with this struggle until we get there,” he said.
Yari, who was accompanied by a former chairman of Senate committee on Gas and Housing, Osita Izunaso, said the Consitution is supreme to any other law.
“Any law that is not in tandem with the Constitution is null and void. It is not over until it is over.
“The most important and encouraging is the president’s speech that he is going to rule Nigeria according to the Constitution of Nigeria,” he added.
The acting national chairman of NNPP, Abba Kawu-Ali, described Yari as a competent leader “capable to occupy the sit of the senate presidency.”
“Yari has shown his capacity as a two-term governor of Zamfara State, we are confident that when you get there you won’t fail.”
Senate Chief Whip and senate presidency hopeful, Orji Kaki had said he is in talks with Yari over his own bid.
