The news of the death of five persons in a road accident last weekend along Ibadan-Ife expressway, threatened to go the way of other reports of mishaps on the deadly road.
But Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, representing Oyo Central in the Senate, stormed the scene last Monday, insisting that something had to be done. She agreed that the accident, like many others, was due to the road’s deplorable state.
The scene was the Adegbayi area on the road, opposite Obat oil, Egbeda Local Government Area, Oyo Central.
At the site, accompanied by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the senator made a phone call to the Managing Director of the contracting company handling the road’s rehabilitation.
She also called the Director of Federal Ministry of Works for Oyo state.
The senator did not leave until she got word that work would resume on the site. And it did resume. Yesterday, the workers were at the site to begin remedial work.
On receiving the senator in his office, the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, promised to monitor the situation.
Expressing satisfaction at the company’s fulfilment of their pledge to hit site, Senator Sunmonu stressed that “the increase in infrastructural developments, particularly those that have the capacity to save lives will always be at the forefront of my actions”.
She added: “My people, during the campaign I promised to provide a listening ear and to heed the calls of my constituents. You will recall the significant efforts made to ensure resumption of work on the Oyo-Ogbomosho Expressway”.
