Healthcare services at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, were on Tuesday grounded, as workers under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUALHP) embarked on an indefinite strike to press home the demand for their salaries.
Members of the union who carried placards with various inscriptions, moved around the hospital to prevent some of their members from working.
NUALHP’s Chairman, Mr Oladayo Olabampe, who announced the commencement of the indefinite strike at a press briefing, said its members decided to embark on the strike because some of them employed in 2020 are being owed five months salaries.
Olabampe stated that the stipends of interns in the medical line at the hospital had also been irregular since January 2021.
He said it was double standard on the part of government to have interns from the field of medicine and dentistry paid through the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria house officer while leaving out interns of other professions in the medical line.
Members of the union consist of all health workers in the hospital, aside from doctors and nurses.
