Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday attacked the Otuoke country home of former President Goodluck Jonathan, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State in a bid to steal a gunboat belonging to the military stationed at the creek.
The assailants who came in about five engine boats stormed the security post in Otuoke, about 100 metres away from Dr Jonathan’s residence, but met resistance by soldiers who engaged them in a firefight.
A statement by the Media Adviser to the former president, Ikechukwu Eze, confirmed the attack which he claimed occurred at 1:30 am.
He said the military overpowered the gunmen, forcing them to retreat. He added that one soldier was killed in the gunfire while another was injured.
Eze, who stated that Jonathan was not at home when the attack happened, said the former president returned immediately he got the information and condemned the attack.
According to him, the former president has condoled with the family of the deceased soldier as well as the military and has urged the concerned security authorities to swing into action and bring the culprits to book.
