Fashion is flicky and fun, it never goes out of style as it is an expression of who we are and how we live. Often times, people dress to pass a subtle or clear message about their personality. Sometimes, this message reverberates and resonates with us so loudly that we can’t get them out of our heads and then pushes us to pause and ponder on what could have inspired such fashion idea in the first place.
It is true that fashion is revolving and that true fashion never really dies but there are some trends on the Nigerian fashion scene that should never hit the runway again. They should never resurrect and if they are still trending, they should fizzle out as soon as possible.
1. Short sleeve over long sleeves
This trend is mostly popular among men. Why wear a short sleeve or a long sleeve when you can wear either? It is excessive clothing especially in the not-so-friendly Nigerian hot weather.
2. Anything with “off-white” written on it
Whoever invented the “off-white” phrase never thought it would be go from being trendy to something that bugs us. You will see the phrase on anything and everything that ranges from t-shrits to caps, belts and even face caps. There are actually more “off-whites” than Nigerians on our streets and we want to take this trend off our streets.
3. Transparent plastic shoes
These shoes give you the feel that you are looking at the feet with clouded vision. We’re better off without these shoes for all the reasons in the world. Experts say that the feet naturally swell during mid-day, so someone can go from a size 6 to 8 in the afternoon, and because of the lack of flexibility which is one of the most disapproving qualities of the shoes, it makes the foot stuck in the shoe and in most cases leaves the wearer with a scar when you try to force it off.
4. Arm warmers
We allow the wrong things to trend in this part of the world. Why wear a arm warmer when the entire body is cold, why not just wear a cardigan or more clothes than necessary if you really want to cover up.
5. Unnecessary belts
It’s true that we all want to make a fashion statement but there are times when this fashion item has no business with what we are wearing, what we ending up looking
6. Cardigan as shirts
Cardigans are meant to protect us from the cold weather but they become a nuisance when we wear them as shirts. There is nothing stylish about this trend it is simply a nuisance.
7. Dress over pants
This is simple, it’s either you go for the dress or the pants. It is simply unnecessary bother to have a lengthy dress worn over pants when you have as well worn a blouse or shirt over the same part. This was popular at some point in the country but should never come back please. It should remain in the past where it belongs. Our hot Nigerian weather even makes it a no-no!
8. Socks with sport sandals
It is not only the male folk that are guilty of this, the female gender are equally to be blamed. Socks aren’t meant to be worn in sport sandals. It might look nice but then it’s wrong.
9. Leggings worn as pants
Pants should be worn when they ought to and they should never be replaced with leggings. They do not serve the same purpose and the trend of wearing leggings as pants should never have a comeback!
Or
Old fashion trends that are timeless and ageless!
True fashion never truly dies; it can only be modernized to suit the taste and fashion sense of the contemporary age. The last couple of decades have witnessed an influx of different fashion ideas that have made wave and rocked the industry. Some of these ideas have died out with time while some can’t still be done without.
Rather than allow these trends die we had rather add some spice to them and rock them in a new way.
1. Denim
Denim is ever classy and has forever been a trendy favorite. Since the first pair was made in 1873 it has become very popular and now has several variations which range from the skinny jeans, to tight fit and the likes. It will be ever trendy due to its versatility.
2. Little black dress
LBD is never out of style for women, because it is a dress that can serve the dual purpose of being worn to an office and then to a dinner date. Since black is a very rich color, it is suitable for every woman and it will never go out of style because it is also perfect for just about any time of the year.
3. Sunglasses
Whatever type of shades you’re wearing; this fashion accessory is always bespoke. They compliment your outfit with elegance and style.
4. White t-shirt
This made it into our list because you can never go wrong with a plain white tee, you can always combine with jeans or pants. It is flexible and a go-to outfit for any occasion. No one would ever blame you for turning up in a white tee.
5. Animal prints
Trends come and go but this one is always for the keep. It has evolved through several decades and somehow still has a place in most people’s wardrobe.
6. Suspenders
This cloth has long strips of fabric worn over the shoulder; these strips of fabric are meant to keep the trouser in place and they first were first popularized in 1822. It became popular only to fizzle out again but then it never died completely because of it’s universality and flexibility.
7. Turtle necks
Turtle necks are never out of style too. They make the prefect outfit with a blazer or on pants. They are also universal and provide you with the comfort you need especially on cold days.
8. Blazers
Blazers are always in vogue because of how adaptable they are to any occasion. You can rock one to the office or anywhere and still retain your elegant look.
9. Three piece suit
Just like the blazers, they are also adaptable for any occasion and provide you with the casual or formal appearance you need to achieve at any time.
