Tanzanian President John Magufuli, ordered the arrest of a rapper, Ney Wa Mitego, over a song deemed insulting to the government.
Ney Wa Mitego (real name: Emmanuel Elibariki) hit the government hard in his new song, ‘Wapo’ currently trending online.
His arrest comes just days after President Magufuli nicknamed “Buldozer” warned media owners to be careful on how they use their press freedom.
Part of the lyrics asks: “Is there still freedom of expression in the country?” and refers to a “doctor” who can’t tolerate criticism.
Tanzania’s Information Minister Harrison Mwakyembe has however ordered the rapper Ney wa Mitego to be released but asked him to go and “improve” the song.
It is not clear if that will produce a remix or a withdrawal of the song.
