The lion reported to have escaped early Wednesday from a wild life park in Jos, Plateau State, has been killed.
An official of the Plateau State Ministry of Tourism, in charge of the park, Abdullahi Abe, confirmed that the animal had been shot dead.
He said the body of the lion would be taken to the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, Jos south Local Government Area the state, for preservation.
Mr. Abe said the lion did not harm anyone as speculated. He did not give further details.
But some people think killing the lion was a wrong approach. They ask: Why shoot the lion with live bullets? Why kill an asset? Why destroy an asset of Nigeria’s tourism industry, after all, it harmed no one!
As it is done in civilized climes, should the park security not have sent word out to security agents to use tranquilizers instead of live bullets? Couldn’t the lion be caught and returned to the park?
Was the dead lion treated right? Being transported in a wheelbarrow! What happened to Animal rights?
