Arrangement has been concluded by civil society organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of Coaliton of Pro -Democracy Groups for a Better Nigeria, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the self-declaration of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, as president.
Abiola declared himself as president-elect inside the old Epetedo Hall, Dumare Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State, in 1994. The declaration led to his incarceration by the military junta of late Gen Sani Abacha. Abiola died in detention on July 7, 1998.
Outlining the activities lined up for the event, the National Coordinator, Coaliton of Pro-Democracy Groups for a Better Nigeria, Com Awa Bamiji, in a statement,said President Bola Tinubu would be the guest speaker.
According to Awa, special prayers would be offered at graveside for Abiola, his family, victims of the June 12 election and Nigeria after the national discourse.
“The prayers would be led by elder statesman and renowned Islamic cleric, Prof Sabitu Olagoke (JP), Leader, Shafaudeen Islamic Center Worldwide,” he added.
