Members of the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday ignored the announcement by the National Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, that its national convention has been cancelled.
The governors, it was gathered, have appointed former Kaduna governor, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi as the party’s caretaker national chairman.
At the convention holding in Port Harcourt, the party members then decided to set up a National Caretaker Committee to stir the affairs of the party and organise a convention to hold elections in the next 90 days.
In an announcement made by former Akwa Ibom governor, Godswill Akpabio, Makarfi was made National Chairman and Senator Ben Obi, National Secretary of the caretaker committee.
No member of the committee would be eligible to stand election in the election coming up in 90 days.
Meanwhile, in a parallel convention held in Abuja by a faction of the party, Senator Ibrahim Mantu emerged interim chairman.
The faction is led by former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana.
Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Hon. Leo Ogor, and other members of the national Assembly were present at the convention held in Port Harcourt. Uche Secondus was also there.
All PDP governors were also present in Port Harcourt.
