A promising South African boxer, Mzwanele Kompolo, has died after receiving a first round knockout in a bout and being unable to recover from it.
According to reports, he collapsed after being knocked out by Siphenathi Qampi.
Kompolo was rushed to the Frere Hospital in the Eastern Cape Province after her ring collapse, but he fell into a coma. South Africa’s sports ministry announced that he died Tuesday, September 15.
South Africa’s sports ministry is still investigating the death of female boxer Phindile Mwelase late last year. Mwelase died after being in a coma for two weeks following a fight in the capital, Pretoria.
