There were reports on Monday that armed men attacked the convoy of former President Goodluck Jonathan close to his private residence in Bayelsa State.
The report said the men, pictured below, were overpowered and arrested by Jonathan’s security team. It was also gathered that the men were supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
But while the story was going viral and generating anger, the police in the state came out to clarify issues.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Asinim Butswat, the hoodlums were not actually out to attack or assassinate Jonathan.
He explained that the men were a group of hungry youths who mistook the former President’s convoy for one of the governorship candidate in the December 5 election, referring to Timipre Sylva.
He said that the youths followed the convoy for alms, only to discover it was that of Jonathan and not the governorship candidate. They were however arrested before they could withdraw. The police said no weapon was found on them.
