US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at keeping immigrant families together. The order ends a controversial policy of separating children from migrants who cross the American border illegally.
The families were detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The order would house parents and children caught crossing the U.S. border together, possibly on military bases, instead of separating them.
Trump however retained his administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy.
“I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “At the same time, we are keeping a very powerful border, but continue to be zero tolerance.”
Trump’s executive order would keep most families together under the Department of Homeland Security, except in cases where an adult may pose a threat to a child.
“You’re going to have a lot of happy people,” Trump said as he signed the order.
