Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, Super Falconets, defeated Canada 3-1 in Alajuela on Thursday morning to finish with a perfect record in Group C of the ongoing World Cup in Costa Rica.
The Falconets after keeping a clean sheet in their opening two games of the tournament, conceded for the first time.
The Canadians took the lead in the second minute through Kaila Novak.
Nigeria took control of the game afterwards with Esther Onyenezide scoring the equaliser from the spot in the 24th minute after a Canadian player stopped a goal bound shot with her hand.
Onyenezide doubled the Falconets’ lead again from the penalty spot eight minutes later following a foul on Mercy Idoko.
The midfielder has netted three goals in three outings for Nigeria at the tournament.
Chioma Olise scored the third goal in the dying minutes of the game with a close range finish.
The Falconets will take on Group D runners-up, Netherlands in the quarter-final on Sunday.
The quarter final match will commence at 11:30pm on Sunday.
