The workers unions at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have rejected the appointment of a new acting vice chancellor (VC) for the institution.
Addressing an emergency congress of the university’s workers on Thursday, leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) called on the visitor to the school, President Muhammad Buhari, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and National Universities Commission (NUC) to reverse the removal of the former VC, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
The unions also called for the dissolution of the school’s governing council led by Dr. Wale Babalakin.
The institution’s ASUU Chairman, Dr. Dele Ashiru, who spoke at the congress said: “All workers unions affirm confidence in Ogundipe. The congress of this university affirms confidence in the leadership of our vice chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe. This campus rejects any appointment of any surrogate vice chancellor by whatever means.
“We want the Federal Ministry of Education to please call Dr. Wale Babalakin to order and abbrogate the decision. Today, we say no to impunity, recklessness, lawlessness, abuse of processes. We welcome our vice chancellor’s continue stay in office.”
He added: “I want to rededicate myself to the service of this university. This is my 30th year at UNILAG. I have dedicated my life to the university as a Head of Department, Dean of PG School, DVC Academic and Research.”
