The United States has banned large electronic devices on some foreign airlines flights coming from some countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
Officials said the ban had been under consideration since the U.S. government learned of a threat several weeks ago.
According to an official announcement on Tuesday, only cell phones are allowed. No American airline would be affected.
The ban restricts passengers flying to the U.S on foreign airlines from 10 airports from carrying in their luggage electronic devices like tablets, portable DVD players, laptops and cameras.
The routes affected are direct flights to the U.S. from Amman in Jordan; Cairo in Egypt; Istanbul in Turkey; Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia; Kuwait City in Kuwait; Doha in Qatar; Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; and Casablanca in Morocco.
The airlines that fly from these airports to the U.S. are Royal Jordanian, Egypt Air, Turkish Airlines, Saudia, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad and Royal Air Maroc. Around 50 flights a day will be covered by the new restrictions.
Even though the airlines have up to 96 hours to comply, some of them have started issuing notices to their customers.
