The Oyo State Government disclosed on Tuesday that it discovered 50 schools without pupils in the state but with full compliment of teachers.
It further hinted of discovery of 10,000 redundant primary school teachers.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, told made the disclosure after the State Executive Council meeting.
The commissioner said that the discovery was made from the ongoing verification exercise embarked upon by the state government in its bid to ascertain authentic workers in the state civil service.
Olowofela said that government planned to move those with additional qualification among the 10,000 teachers to the junior secondary school.
He stressed that there was no going back on government’s decision on stoppage of automatic promotion for pupils in schools across the state.
The commissioner also re-emphasized that subventions to tertiary institutions owned by the state have been reduced to 25 per cent. He urged the heads of the institutions to be creative in generating revenues for smooth running of the institutions.
In another development, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Bimbo Kolade, said that the N6.8bn pension scam inherited from the previous administration in the state has hindered payment of pension and gratuity to pensioners in the state.
Kolade said that N880 million was released to primary school pensioners and local government retirees, pointing out that they have received the payment.
He said that N6.2 billion was also released for the payment of June, July and August salaries of primary school teachers.
Kolade said that the state government had instructed the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to liaise with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to access the N400million it has so far recovered.
