An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Oyo Stat, Dr Ismail Adewusi, has deplored the situation where only Ibadan indigenes are presented and elected governors in the state, stressing that the situation will stop some day.
Adewusi, who was a governorship aspirant under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2011, spoke to Newspeakonline in Ibadan.
The politician, who is the Postmaster General/CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), also revealed that he would no longer contest any election, but that he would join others to determine those who will emerge as candidates in Oyo State.
He said: “I am not contesting for any election anymore but as we know, we have our base, Oyo State remains our base, and we will continue to play active role in emergence of new leaders, both the executive and legislative arm of government in 2023. And by the grace of God, it will happen.”
When asked if his place of origin (Eruwa) was the reason he could not pick his party’s governorship ticket in 2011, he said: “The issue of where you come from actually plays a role in emergence of leaders, particularly in Oyo State. Since we returned to democracy in 1999, there are some kind of seamless developments across a the seven zones of Oyo State. I want to see in my life time, a governor that will emerge from Ibarapa zone, from Oke-Ogun and Oyo zone. Of course, we’ve had governors form Ibadan and Ogbomoso zone. I want to see other zones also bring up governors because the state belongs to all of us.”
Asked how soon he believed a non-Ibadan indigene can win a governorship election in the state, Adewusi said: “It is just a matter of time. Let us keep our fingers crossed, it will happen. I am very positive about that and I don’t have any doubt about it. It will happen.”
