The Oyo State Police Command has explained why it arrested the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Oyo State, Comrade Waheed Olojede, on Thursday.
Comrade Olojede was reported to have been arrested for leading a protest against privatization of schools in the state on Wednesday, during which protesters disrupted a government stakeholders meeting to discuss the policy.
The Police PRO in the state, DSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed to Newspeakonline last night that Olojede and other protest leaders including Comrade C K Ogundeji, NLC Secretary and other comrades, were invited by the police.
He said the essence of the invitation was for them “to explain their role in the alleged wanton destruction of government’s property during their violent protest yesterday (Wednesday)”
The NLC on Wednesday led other protesters to walk against an alleged plan by the state government to privatise some public schools in the state.
But the state government has denied planning to sell off schools. It explained that the process was simply a pubic private partnership proposal in order to ensure that the affected schools were well funded and properly run.
