At about 5.30pm on Wednesday, a dramatic scene played out at the gate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State.
A 35-year-old woman carrying a baby boy was accosted by nurses who said they suspected her movement. Quickly, an alarm was raised, passers-by gathered, security guards gathered, and questioning began.
Upon interrogation, it was discovered that the baby the woman was carrying was stolen from the hospital’s maternity ward!
After he was handed over to detectives at the Central Police Station, Nnewi, it emerged that the suspect, identified as Dorothy Sunday, sneaked into the maternity section and stole the five-day old baby whose mother had just stepped out to wash some clothes.
The baby’s mother was later identified as 22-year-old Happiness Mmadu.
Police say Sunday would be charged to court after investigations.
