Zonta International Club, Ibadan II, has dewormed 500 children at Idi Omo community in Ibadan,Oyo State.
Speaking,the President,Zonta Club Ibadan II, Dr. Olufunmi Adegbile, said the deworming exercise is a regular activity for the Zonta, adding that club has taken several projects to the community for 34 years.
She explained that Idi Omo is an adopted community for the club.
” We have decided to start with the first phase of deworming children because most schools just resumed,” she said.
A member of the club, Mrs Omotola Akinkoye, said Zonta, with the assistance of the Oyo State Government, has drilled two boreholes in the community.
She also said several health programmes have been brought to Idi Omo, which has helped to transform the community.
“We come for the deworming programme twice a year. Zonta Club is helping the less privileged especially women and children. So, we make it our project to take care of women because women will take care of their family.
“We also have plans for other community,but since this is our adopted community, we have to start from here,’ She said.
Another member, Dr.(Mrs) Omolara Smith, said the club decided to embark on the exercise because “children play around and sometimes they don’t wash their hands. There is a lot of worm infestation around,especially worms that can suck their blood. So we decided to do a deworming project among children. We have also provided portable water so that they can take the drug immediately.”
A senior consultant from Molly medical centre, Dr Oguntoye also enlightened the community on the dangers, importance of deworming and how to prevent infestation.
A member of the community, Mrs Latifah Wasiu said the first time she encountered Zonta was 18 years ago when she was pregnant with her first child and the deworming doses helped her a lot.
Also, Mrs Elizabeth Adeniyi appreciates Zonta Club, Ibadan II for their love to the community. She said she banks on Zonta for deworming her children on a regular basis.
