Amid the rising insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), some police officers attached to the IGP STS team have been accused of forcefully collecting N29.9 million from a resident of Abuja.
The incident, according to Harrison Gwamnishu, a candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the Delta State House of Assembly in the 2023 general elections, happened in January.
Gwamnishu had in a video posted on his X account alleged that the businessman was kidnapped in Abuja by the police officers who detained him until he transferred all the money in his bank account to them.
They, thereafter, insisted he should call all his relatives and friends to keep sending money before he could be freed.
Gwamnishu, who shared receipts of the transactions, also alleged that the man was taken away from his site without any proper complaint against him, adding that he was not asked to write a formal statement by the police officers.
Quoting the post on Tuesday, the Force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest of some of the culprits.
“We are making a headway on this matter, and justice will be served, as some suspects have been arrested. Hakuna matata,” Adejobi wrote.
But Gwamnishu disagreed with Adejobi’s comment, adding that the police have been unable to fish out the culprits.
“Our lives are in danger. Two weeks on, police officers we reported that robbed a Nigerian of his N30,300,000 are missing from Service. Their phones are said to be switched off. The @PoliceNG seems not to have data or pictures/passport photos of these officers they recruited into the force.
“Officers deployed, armed with AK-47 rifles attached to IGP STS can’t be found. Same office that boast of tracking kidnappers and bandits cannot track their own.
“IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, HOLD NIGERIA POLICE,” the politician wrote.
