The Coaliton of Pro-Democracy Groups for a Better Nigeria has described Saturday’s invasion of Oyo State Government secretariat by suspected Yoruba nation agitators as a “classical definition of insanity and display of lowest level of illiteracy.”
A statement by the National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Awa Bamiji, condemned the incident in totality and called for a thorough investigation of the invasion to unravel the mystery behind it.
“This splinter group, according to Prof Banji Akintoye, was beclouded by inordinate ambition to outsmart the main body of Yoruba self-determination group, led Prof Akintoye and Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) in taking over the seat of the old Western Region Government. They seem not to understand the gravity of the crime they have committed.
“They furnished the office of their provisional head of dramatic government, did swearing-in ceremony and camouflage uniforms were being used by them, including the ADC to the interim head of non-existent government.
“Based on viral video, Mrs Dupe Onitiri-Abiola revealed that in pursuant to earlier declaration and reclamation they did on Sunday, November 20, 2022 and Sunday December 18, 2022 respectively, which should be under Prof Banji Akintoye then, as well as the one she did on Friday, April 12, 2024, coupled with the swearing in of Omobolaji Olawale Akinola Omokore, Yoruba Nation has taken off. Also, the gunmen’s invasion of Agodi Secretariat on Saturday, April 13, 2024 by this splinter group, it appeared as if Prof Akintoye and Chief Adeyemo (a.k.a Sunday Igboho), who were in charge of the parental body of the group were too slow in taking over the government of old Western Region, having produced flags, insignia of office and other symbols,” he said.
The coalition commended the combined team of Army, Police, Civil Defence and Amotekun Corps who engaged the armed agitators and neutralised them.
“To a kindergarten student, it was all drama and classical example of madness, all in the name of Yoruba self-determination struggle.
“We, therefore, condemned all these unfolding drama in totality and call for a thorough investigation into the incident to unravel the mystery behind it. Security network at States’ and Federal Government Secretariats as well as Government Houses should be beefed up because they did not only ridicule themselves but the entire people of the South West and Nigeria at large with their shameful, senseless, illiterate, unlawful, selfish, absurd, uncultured, thoughtless and barbaric move to hijack power with their drama in the broad day light,” he said.
Awa called on all patriotic citizens and residents of Nigeria to be law abiding and keep faith with democracy in this challenging period.
“It is on record that this group frowned at and publicly condemned the Yoruba Nation advocacy since its emergence, because we so much believe in thr sovereignty of Nigeria, especially now that various bold steps are being taken daily by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to steer the ship of this country towards economic recovery,” he added.
