A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Steven Ukpukpen, slumped and died during an early morning workout today May 30.
Reports said he was jogging along Moore road in Calabara when he slumped. He was rushed to a nearby Navy Clinic, but medical officials on duty said he was in a critical condition and therefore directed that he should be transferred to another hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Confirming the demise of the lawmaker, the speaker of the Assembly, John Gaul-Lebo, expressed shock at the news. The speaker said he was with the deceased as at 11pm yesterday.
“I am still in shock. I do not know what to say. We are in a meeting with the family members and we would later issue a statement on the sad development,” he said.
A family member said the deceased did not complain of any ailment before his death.
” We don’t know the cause if his death yet but we’re preparing” to take him to the motuary now” he said.
May his soul rest in peace.
