The Federal Government has refuted claims that some foreign countries, including United States and France are planning to establish foreign military bases in Nigeria.
Recall that some media houses had over the weekend reported that United States and France among others are discussing with the Nigerian government to set up military bases in the country.
But Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Monday categorically denied the existence of any discussions between Nigeria and foreign nations about hosting military installations.
Idris described the reports as “false alarms,” and urged the public to disregard such unfounded allegations.
He emphasised that the Federal Government has not entertained, nor is it contemplating any offers to site foreign military bases within the country’s borders.
“The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country. We have neither received nor are we considering any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria.
“The Nigerian government already enjoys foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges, and the President remains committed to deepening these partnerships, with the goal of achieving the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda
“The clarification comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to bolster security and stability, for which it has sought international cooperation,” he said.
