An accident that occured in the early hours of Tuesday claimed seven lives, including three school children in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.
The auto crash, which occurred around 9am, along Osun West bypass road involved a commercial bus, a motorcycle and a tricycle carrying the school pupils.
It was gathered that the commercial bus, with registration number, RBC15 ZN, was coming from the stadium end and veered off its lane to the other side of the road where it rammed into the tricycle and motorcycle, killing four people on the spot.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson in Osun State, Agnes Ogungbemi, said the incident was as a result of a tyre burst and over-speeding by the commercial bus.
She also affirmed that seven persons were killed in the accident, including four adults, two male children and a female child.
“Four persons died on the spot, four injured persons were taken to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, three of the injured victims were later confirmed dead and one female child is undergoing treatment,” she said.
She added that the vehicles were taken to Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters in Osogbo.
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Sen Ademola Adeleke, had expressed shock over the incident, saying he is deeply hurt by the unfortunate death of residents.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, th governor expressed heartfelt sympathy of the government and people of Osun State to the families of those that lost their loved ones in the incident.
Adeleke urged road users to exercise caution and adhere strictly to safety guidance on the roads, saying the state government will work with relevant authorities to make the roads more safer for users.
“I am distraught to hear about the terrible accident that resulted in the death of five people in Osogbo. It is really painful for me, and I want to use this avenue to commiserate with the families of the deceased.
“It is my prayer that God Almighty repose their souls and give their loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses occasioned by their death. As a government, we will give the needed support to the injured and pray for their quick recoveries,” the governor stated.
