A Commissioner of Police in Nigeria, Uche Henry, has been elected chairperson of the Africa working group on cybercrime by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL).
Henry was elected during the 10th Africa working group meeting on cybercrime for heads of units, which took place in Abuja from April 29 to May 3.
He succeeds Ratjindua Tjivikua of Namibia, who recently completed his tenure.
Henry is the Commissioner of Police overseeing the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) National Cybercrime Centre.
He was appointed as director of the NPF cybercrime unit in 2022.
In his acceptance speech, Henry expressed his commitment to leading the group in combating cybercrimes across Africa.
He called for collaboration among member units to enhance collective efforts in preventing and investigating cybercrimes on the continent.
The police commissioner emphasised the need to adopt indigenous solutions to address Africa’s unique socio-cultural challenges in cyber security.
While congratulating Henry, Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, quoted the Inspector-General of Police,Kayode Egbetokun, as saying the election of the police commissioner is a testament to his expertise in combatting cybercrimes.
Egbetokun urged the Henry to make significant strides in promoting cyber security in Africa.
