A civil society organisation, Yoruba Patriots Movement (YPM), has warned Nigerians against making statements capable of inciting the public against the government or promote military coup over the economic hardship in the country.
The organisation, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Coordinator, Chief Oladosu Oladipo, and Secretary, Comrade Awa Bamiji, also called for effective monitoring of distribution of palliatives by all arms of the government in the 36 states of the federation.
It opposed military coup as a solution and urged all democrats to oppose those touting the idea of military coup, stressing that the survival and development of democracy are a duty of all who value freedom and constitutional rights. .
The movement noted that rather than incite the public against the government, all concerned Nigerians should rise up to monitor how the three tiers of government are distributing palliatives to ensure that the items are getting to the grassroots.
“The YPM insists that instead of public incitement by expressing our hunger and anger, what Nigerians need to direct their energies to this time are solution to the myriad of problems in order to save democracy. We should monitor distribution of palliatives to ensure that they reach the right people at the grassroots, especially in South West region.
“There should be public enlightenment and awareness, ward by ward. Stakeholders including market women, self determination groups, Agbekoya, traditional rulers, students, artisans, civil societies and labour unions should hold a summit to convey the message to the government and other stakeholders in the country,” the statement read in part.
