The Olojoda of Oda kingdom, in Ondo State, Oba Julius Omomo, has joined his ancestors.
A family member, Ade Adelakun, broke the news of the 83-year-old monarch’s death to newsmen, on Sunday.
Adelakun said the traditional ruler died on Saturday after a brief illness. He described Omomo as a “humble, decent and down-to-earth monarch.”
According to Adelakun, the monarch’s domain witnessed peace and development during his reign.
Omomo was installed as Olojoda on May 30, 2023, and was crowned in December of same year.
His ascension to the throne was, however, met with litigation.
Members of the ruling house described his installation as illegal and an invitation to anarchy.
They said that the installation was not approved by the kingmakers and the people of the community.
According to reports, despite an appeal challenging Omomo’s nomination as monarch for the community, the state government approved his installation.
“The notice of appeal was communicated to the state governor, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chairman Akure South Local Government and the Ruling House.
“Any step taken by the government would be prejudicial and might lead to a breakdown of law and order in the ancient community if the Omomo is installed as the traditional ruler,” the ruling house had said in a statement at the time.
But the state government said it was not served with any court injunction.
