The government of Niger has declared a 15-day state of emergency in the border region of Diffa in order to fight Boko Haram insurgents that have attacked the region severally in the past week.
The state of emergency gives troops the power to search houses without a warrant. It also gives the region’s governor powers to introduce new restrictions without passing any laws.
Niger has been targeted by the insurgents over the past week, with residents reporting a car bomb in Diffa town and assaults by militants on nearby Bosso.
