A Catholic Church building in Delta state collapsed on Sunday morning during mass killng one person and injuring 15 others.
The church, St. Paul Catholic Church in Adagbrasa-Ugolo community in Okpe Local Government Area of the state, collapsed during the Sunday morning mass.
The deceased, Jeffery Enukanarhi, was an 11-year-old boy.
The Delta State Chairman of the Nigerian Institute Of Building revealed that the building was almost one hundred years old.
“This is indeed a very sad and unfortunate incident. It is our prayer that the soul of the deceased will rest in peace, and that the injured will experience quick recovery,” the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the people of Ugolo in Okpe Kingdom over this tragedy.” He added.
The state government has promised to foot the bills of those being treated in the hospital, regretting that nothing could be done to bring back the dead.
Commissioner for Works, James Augoye, who visited the scene of the collapse, said the state government will investigate the cause of the accident.
