The congress of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Ibadan chapter has sacked the union’s leaders over crisis that ensued from joining the strike embarked upon by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Oyo State.
Workers in the state are currently on strike over unpaid backlog of workers’ salaries and alleged commercialization of education sector.
ASUP in the state has two factional executive councils. The one led by Kelani Ajadi declared the strike action but the Mr Isiaka Salawu-led faction stood against it saying the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi had demonstrated kindness to he lecturers and therefore did not deserve to be paid back with an industrial action.
In a letter addressed to the rector of the institution, the Ajadi-led faction said “the strike was in line with the on-going strike declared by the State Chapter of the NLC to press home labour demands.” They added that the strike would not in any way affect the marking of exmaination scripts and supervision of projects.
But other members of the union said there was never a time that the Nigeria Labour Congress joined ASUP in any strike describing the action of Ajadi led executive as null and void.
While alleging that the Ajadi led exco had lost focus, they noted that what should be the priority of the executive council of ASUP in the state was to address the issues concerning 570 staff of the institution who had issues with the state government in the on-going verification exercise.
The congress of the union which was held in the institution’s large lecture theatre on Monday ended in a
rowdy session as leaders on both sides tried frantically to gain the attention of other members.

A six-man caretaker committee led by Architect Kola Oladunjoye was later constituted and the two factional executive councils asked to step aside and stop speaking on behalf of ASUP, Oyo State chapter.
