All flights in and out of Manchester Airport have been suspended due to bad weather and repair works.
Airport authorities described the situation as ‘temporary’ even though an estimated reopening time was currently not known.
Many thousands of passengers are currently stranded as both runways have been closed.
A spokesman for the airport said Runway One has been closed for ‘emergency repairs’.
Runway Two has also been suspended because of thick fog.
It follows a day of delays and flight cancellations because of patches of thick freezing fog.
